26 March 2012
Chandler, March 26, 2012 – From February 2th to 12th, 2012, representatives of the lobster industry from Southern Gaspé with GÎMXPORT have met with Italian importers in Milan and Rimini as well as French importers in Paris.
In Rimini, at the Mediterranean Seafood Exhibition, the mission enabled the organisation of 23 meetings between Italian and Canadian companies, all within a 3 day visit. In France, the promotion strategy focused on the organisation of a cocktail with product tasting.
Pursuing their efforts in developping new markets and export market diversification, a second mission was undertaken by the Gaspé’s lobster industry, in Italy and France, in respect to their structured approach in developing these targeted markets. Seven (7) industrials took part in this mission along with Mr. Donald Walker, President of the Regroupement des Pêcheurs Professionnels du Sud de la Gaspésie Inc. (RPPSG)
There is no doubt that this initiative as well as the previous ones, are changing the structure of the whole regional lobster industry, thus in many ways:
1) The development and market opportunities have convinced some processors to add new operations to their lobster sector’s traditional ways.
2) The European market development will enable exporting frozen lobsters in comparison to the traditional Quebec and United-States market which enables exporting live and frozen lobsters.
3) At last, the European market development could have a positive effect on lobster pricing as well as for exporting all other species fished within the region. Moreover, it would have a positive effect on the processing factories’ profitability.
Some great opportunities have outcome from this overall approach, it has been very positive and steps forward will be undertaken as soon as the fishing season starts.
The lobster industry of Gaspésie has established a strategy that enabled us to implement an action plan in order to develop new markets. To this date, we can confirm that there are great opportunities for our products
Thanks to the financial support of the Canada Economic Development (CED), of the ministère du Développement économique, de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation (MDEIE), of the ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation (MAPAQ), as without their contribution, this mission and the overall initiative would not have been possible
