Chandler, February 18th 2012. An important trade mission took place in China from February 2nd to February 12th in order to promote gaspesian lobster. Ten business meetings were held in three targeted areas : Beijing (Pékin), Dalian et Guangzhou
The delegation in China was composed of five industrials, two representatives from GIMXPORT and a representative from the Association of Fishermen from the Southern Gaspé Peninsula :
- M. Donald Walker : Regroupement des Pêcheurs Professionnels du Sud de la Gaspésie Inc.
- M. Roch Lelièvre : Lelièvre Lelièvre et Lemoignan Ltée

During this mission the delegation was invited to attend a banquet hosted by the Business Ambassador of Canada to China, Mr. David Mulroney. The keynote speaker for the banquet was the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper and the delegation had the opportunity to meet him.
The economic growth of China is substantial and there is a very high demand for luxury goods. The entire delegation is now convinced of the sales potential represented by the Chinese market and is looking forward to continuing their marketing efforts in China.
According to Mr Réal Nicolas, président of Poisson Salé Gaspésien Ltéé :
« The trade mission in China has helped me find new buyers for my products. It was also noticed that buyers were much more eager to buy compared to last year. »
« The lobster market is increasing in China. We expect that on a medium term basis, we will have trouble meeting demand for Gaspsian lobster in this new market. For example, all our buyers from last year increased their orders for 2012. »
This mission is part of a three year commercialization plan which aims to diversify markets for Gaspesian lobster. More trade missions are to come, including tradeshows and business meetings in Italy, France, Belgium and Spain. It is also planned to welcome a delegation of international buyers in the Gaspé at the start of the 2012 fishing season.
This mission and the entire process was possible thanks to financial support and collaboration from Canada Economic Development (CED), the Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade (MDEIE), the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) Food Processing and Quebec (TRANSAQ).
To achieve this mission, GIMXPORT worked closely with the Association of Fisherman of the Southern Gaspé Peninsula and the Quebec Association of Fishing Industry (AQIP).
